School Counselor News
We have had a great start to the 2009-2010 school year! It’s hard to imagine we have been at school for nearly a month and autumn has officially managed to come in to take summer’s place.
As the school counselor I get the opportunity to be all over the school getting to know students along the way; in classrooms, with individual or small groups of students, in the lunch room, on recess and at dismissal. For many classrooms I am teaching once a week for about 40 minutes. Some of the topics we have covered and will cover are respect, friendship, social skills, current topics that are part of students’ lives. I have enjoyed being in rooms and getting better acquainted with this great group of students!
A couple of trainings/workshops I will be attending soon are:
1. CIS: Career Information System Jr., a program based out of the University of Oregon that helps middle school students explore their interests and career possibilities. I will be using this program with the 7th and 8th graders and will give updates as we get started later in the fall.
2. Family Engagement and Community Resource Fair: A workshop and fair to update me about many family and community services available to assist students and their families. Some of the topics will include adult education and parent nights, the major suspension program, information on the family support centers, and more.
I am so thankful to be at Humboldt this year and look forward to a great year ahead! I can be reached by email ewithers@pps.k12.or.us or by phone, 503-916-5468. I am here on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Please stop by my office (located just to the left of the main doors) if you have any questions or concerns.
See you soon!
