HUMBOLDT LIBRARY NEWS!

The Humboldt School Library is staffed two days weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Our library currently has about 10,500 volumes which are divided into several categories—Fiction (novels); Everybody (picture books/easy readers); Nonfiction; Reference (non-circulating); and a Professional collection.

Library time is scheduled weekly for every class.  Students PK - 3rd grades can check out one book weekly and can not take their books home.   Students 4 -5th grades can check out two books weekly and can take their books home.  We emphasize book care and responsibility.   All students are reminded to treat books like babies (taking special care) and if they take library books home, they should bring them back in good condition on or before their next class visit to the library!

Library privileges are suspended when a book is overdue, damaged, or lost.   Library privileges are reinstated when overdue/lost/damaged books are returned or paid for.   There are no charges for fines only for lost/damaged books!

Volunteers Needed!

I’m looking for VOLUNTEERS to help with the following in the library:

SHELVING!!!!!....Cleaning, sorting and re-arranging/shifting books on the shelves….Be a guest storyteller….Be a guest singer and/or guitar player….Special projects or events as scheduled

Please contact Janice Hopkins, Library Assistant at 503-916-5468 or jhopkins@pps.k12.or.us

Accessing PPS Library Collections from Home

On the web go to the PPS Web Catalog at http://library.pps.k12.or.us/

You can limit your search by selecting your school only or you can expand your search by not selecting any particular school library.  Keyword searching will bring more results than subject searching in general.  However, it’s up to the individual.

Results will appear and will tell you whether or not the book is in a particular collection, whether or not it is available for check out, and where in the library you should be able to find it.  Your patience is necessary as sometimes books could be mis-shelved or borrowed without checking out.

Finding your record on VIA (library circulating system)

On the web go to the PPS Web Catalog at http://library.pps.k12.or.us/

At the top right of the page, log in using your ESIS number (it’s also your school lunch #).   This number can be obtained from your school library or office. For security reasons, parents will need to show ID when requesting child’s ESIS number from the school main office or library.

Provide your first/last name and your ESIS number at the prompt.

Once your record appears, you should be able to see what books you have checked out and renew items if they are renewable.  If there is a hold placed on a book, it will not be renewable.  Renewing books on this system is very similar to renewing from Multnomah County Library.  Also while logged in, patrons can search the web catalog, create a personal reading list, or a search list.   If you’re using a public computer, remember to log-out!  Libraries can provide GUESTS with a temporary VIA ID# from the school they are associated with (such as volunteers, parent/guardians, itinerants).

PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS!

The Great Library Card Adventure

Chief Joseph is signed up for Multnomah County Library’s GREAT LIBRARY CARD ADVENTURE!   This is a special campaign with a focus on all K-5 students and staff members in Multnomah County to have a library card (Chief Joseph will include PK in this campaign).   The 2009 Great Library Card Adventure will run from October 5 through December 4.  A library card is the key to the fullest use of Multnomah County Library’s information resources!  Soon, we will receive a kit that includes Library Card Applications.   If your child already has an active library card—GREAT!
